The people has spoken

Finally the voice of the people has been heard and our next representative has been elected. Many people think that the polls weren’t as fair as they would like; anyway the final outcome was as expected. Personally I liked others more than the winner, but I’m happy as far as it is the best result among worse ones. By the way, Zapatero also won the elections (just in case…)

Thoughts on elections

The second and last politic debate for the upcoming elections was due last Monday. Surely it will help the people who haven’t taken their final decission yet - like me - to clear their doubts about the candidates.

The two candidates
The two candidates

As we could see last week in the previous debate the scenario is very balanced. My opinion is that Zapatero won with a very few advantage both them - as the vast majority of mass media but the most right-winged claim -. However PP still have a chance to change the course of the elections.

The show of elections

Elections have become a show. A big show where every time more and more any media event become of major importance. Politicians want to reach the more people the better and their presence is even visible at non-traditional (but more trendy) media such internet communities like Flickr, Youtube or Facebook. It’s funny to see the links to their profiles in those virtual communities in the front page of the candidates; e.g. the website of Joan Herrera, ICV candidate for the Congress.

Nevertheless we are many light years from the paradigm of elections in the USA - as usual, Americans are more advanced at this than most of the countries - where not only they focus on press coverage, but also they put an effort on their representatives to take place in the Internet. For instance the republican candidate for the Presidency Barack Obama has 13,453 followers in Twitter, and 15,763 pictures in Flickr.

Politician superstar

Naturally in this show we will find well-known popular people in a strategy one more time copied from the States. Some time ago we saw this happening with Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming the Governator of California and now Hillary Clinton, the wife of the former president Bill Clinton, going in for the Presidence. This is also the case of Ana Botella, married with J.M. Aznar and Madrid’s city councilperson.

This way PP has just signed Manuel Pizarro, well-known in the business sphere because he was the president of Endesa, one of the most important companies of Spain, which received an hostile takeover bid during his command. However and in my humble opinion he has nothing to do against Solbes, dedicated to politics since long time ago with proven efficiency. I don’t think somebody opting for the seat of a Minister getting the affiliate party card some weeks before the elections is acceptable. In addition due to Pizarro heading the list of candidates for Madrid, Gallardón (the Mayor of Madrid) had to settle for his place in the party and not stand for one place in that list.

Solbes and Pizarro face off
Solbes and Pizarro face off

We need more politicians like him. We need more politicians that have given their life to the politic world and represent their homeland better than anyboy such J.M. Labordeta (who has already retired) or M.A. Revilla, the current President of Cantabria.

What’s up with minority and green parties?

As you may realized, having got this far in the article I have not written about minority and green parties yet nor they had room in the TV debate to show their programs and initiatives.

iu-logo.jpgThis incipient bipartidism that bring us to previous (and darker) epochs in Spanish history is marked more deeply in certain areas of this country than others. This is due to the fact that nowadays republican parties, green parties, nationalist parties and such does not represent an actual alternative. At any rate in other areas of Spain, not in this blaverist roots land that is Valencia. Somebody voting for a minority party this far along the Valencian politic situation is sending their vote straight to /dev/null.

Call for participation

To conclude, I just want to remember you the next 03/09 you have an appointment with ballots. And as the banner says, “If you don’t go, they will come back”. So, vote to any party you want, but do it intelligently. I will do.

Barcelona - Valencia, goals and blogs

Despite it would seem we the bloggers spend all day long in front of our computers and don’t like sports at all, we do. But one thing’s for sure, we’d rather watching it than practicing it and on top of that if you have an invitation to a football match where you will be able to enjoy free drinks, some tapas, a preferential seat to watch the match… I won’t tell you.

Last Wednesday Spain Ticket Bureau, a company dedicated to sell tickets for sporting and music events invited a series of bloggers - including myself among others such Albert Barra, Carlos Mantero, Ruben Temporal, Daniel González and Ángel Custodio who was my companion - to the Copa del Rey match between F.C. Barcelona and Valencia C.F. that was held in the Camp Nou.

So that I went to Barcelona keen on cheering my team, Valencia C.F. The night started frankly great, with a little reception in which we could have a bite to eat and refresh our thirsty throats. I must say we drank all we could wanted but they where a bit short on food. Hey, we the bloggers are hungry people!

After that and with a bit of rush we could find our preferential seats and the referee gave beginning to the match. The first half passed with no goals between the Valencian team and Barcelona, that didn’t take advantage of their ball possession. In the second half the match got a lot of play, with as many efforts on goal by either side as the goalkeepers and defenders saved. Eventually Villa made the first goal for Valencia, which lasted until the very end despite the persistence of Barcelona players - especially Messi -. Finally, Xavi succeeded at making a goal in the fourth minute of added time to gain a 1-1 home draw that leaves open the qualifying round for the match in Mestalla.

From our seats we could see perfectly the whole field. More pics by Ancude in this photo set.

With no question it was a great experience; Barcelona impressed me in many ways, I met some people whose blogs I usually read and to see more than 90000 people going crazy after Barcelona goal left me stunned.

Disclaimer: If you didn’t realized yet this is a sponsored post. To end up I must thank Roser and Carolina, our hostess of Spain Ticket Bureau and Eduard Corral from Bloguzz for preparing everything.

Should I still wait?

Those who follow me on twitter or talk to me with Gtalk will know that I want to buy a new laptop and surely it will have an Apple logo in its cover. As it will replace my current desktop computer and become my main tool of work I need it to be a powerful machine so, this means I would have to choose between the high-end Macbook or even the base Macbook Pro.

At first this post was titled “Still waiting” because this past Tuesday update didn’t convinced me at all at first sight. I was waiting for a brand new Macbook Pro with a little work of redesign that included a bigger multi-touch trackpad, LED backlit display, Penryn processors and such awaited specs… While the majority of them have been accomplished in the last update, the most important feature for me now haven’t and it was the design (a redesign, indeed). I know that MBP design is a very polished piece of work, almost perfect; but it’s been there since the not-so-old Powerbooks.

The mock-up of SPICU that I would had loved to come true.

In the other hand it is the black Macbook, with many resemblances between his big brother, with similar power due to the last speed-bump, and a bit cheaper; but lacking the backlit keyboard, LED screen, multi-touch trackpad and some more things that I will find in the MBP. So, in the case I finally bought an Apple laptop I’m not definitely sure about which of both them I would choose in the end.

In addition the new Montevina chipset based family of Macbooks and Macbook Pros are rumored to hit the streets soon in June [1] [2], with all that means in terms of a probable Macbook Pro redesign or even a new brushed-metal case Macbook that would make me fall in love with it once and for all.

A wide range of options to consider. Buy now or not? And as important as that, which one? By now, as the saying goes “Buy if you need it, wait if you can“. Frankly my C2D desktop computer still runs fast and I won’t need a laptop computer until the next University semester when I’m moving to Valencia. Meanwhile, what is your opinion?

P.S: I was able to toy around with the Macbook Air yesterday and it’s not my cup of tea so, it’s not even an option. So much thin…

UPDATE: It seems that the Macbook Pro models include some significant changes to the keyboard, as David Pogue predicted and then Ars Technica gathered. More evolution than revolution, but I still want my black Air-style black keyboard.

Saint Ballantine’s

People who have a girlfriend celebrate Saint Valentine’s, others (like me) celebrate Saint Ballantine’s. Chin, chin.

The new fridge for the penguin

This weekend I’ve been moving A penguin in my fridge from Dreamhost to 1&1 servers. The site has been down for a while and then I did some minor tweaks to the theme, like removing the annoying advertising block from the sidebar. In addition it was a totally pain-in-the-ass to migrate the database because it was coded in latin1 instead of UTF-8. Nothing our friend the shell can’t deal with. Now is everything set up and ready.

Update: Finally I also changed the domain name from http://matallo.org to http://c.matallin.com Everything is managed through the .htaccess and Apache magic so, while the previous domain is still registered there’s nothing to be worried about.

Iconographic Magazine premiere

Great news for the Valencian and Spanish design scene. A group of very talented and young designers will launch today the new magazine about graphic design and typography, Iconographic Magazine.

This event will take place at 19:30 in the MUVIM, Valencia where some issues will be released and a special cocktail party with renowned guests will be hold.

The Equilibrium

John Gruber, the author of Daring Fireball and half of The Talk Show, has recently written an article titled this way “Some of the Tweets All of the Time vs. All of the Tweets Some of the Time“. It deals with the reliability of the twitter infrastructure and the fact that some (if not many) tweets have been dropped randomly in order to keep their uptime.

However, when I first read it I imagined it was about some other different thing such the usage of this service of microblogging and the infoxication most of the people suffers everyday: RSS feeds, twitter, tumblr, facebook and on… Should we get the more information the better and then filter it? Or should we cut back the source from the origin and obtain a clutterless stream of information?

I must admit I’m still trying to find the perfect balance between my RealLife(cc) and my life online. It’s hard because I try not to overwhelm myself by subscribing to tons of blogs, follow a lot of people in twitter and that stuff. Nevertheless, if I’m that categoric, I feel as if I was missing something. Maybe I should get a life, but I find quite interesting what many people write in their blogs, even we meet occasionally and I’ve made new friends since I started blogging. So, I will still try and find The Equilibrium.

By the way, how many subscriptions to blogs do you have, and how many people do you follow in twitter (in case you make use of it).

  • Feed Subscriptions: ~45
  • Following: ~50 people

Today I turned 20 years old.

Groundhog day

Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your booties ’cause it’s cooooold out there today.

Remember that every February 2nd the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania celebrates this holiday where Phil, a groundhog, emerges from its burrow to forecast if the winter will soon end or it will continue for 6 more weeks.

This day has also become famous because of the movie starred by Bill Murray with the same name as the post’s title; Groundhog Day, which in my opinion is a must see.

So, if you want to know how much will the winter last, check Phil’s prediction in the Official Web Site of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. You can even watch it live!

Groundhog Day 2008 | About GroundHog Day

Update: Phill said “As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!”. The Joy of Tech today’s comic and DailyCosas 2.0 also commented on this event.
